Memorial observance It isnt about Jesus at all!
by 1badmutha inwe all know that jesus is a pretty much-overlooked figure by the wbts.
they refuse to celebrate his birth for a number of convoluted reasons, which i refuse to argue.
but, it is curious that they celebrate the death of christ.

Facts are important but a person's heart is even more important. Frankly, I don't understand the Witness' take on Jesus. I've devoted quite some time to study the Historical Jesus. What is their Christology? It seems that Christians should be Christ-centric, not YHWH centric. Another thing I've noted in Paul's authentic writings are the concepts of love and grace. The Society focuses on the moral/rule making in Paul, most of which is not considered Pauline. Strangely, the part where Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to touch him after the crucifixion and resurrection always gave me the creeps. Spooky. How did my family get involved with a group of people who say they are Christians yet don't seem to care much about Jesus. It is very confusing to me.

Wooden language is the perfect term for it! Specialized vocabulary exists. Also, I never put it together but the first paragraphs aren't outrageous. Part of me is curious as to how many paragraphs down, it gets uniquely Witness like. I never knew Witnesses socially, aside from my family. It is amazing to me to post here and to be able to relate my experiences. The validation was missing. I would expect the Internet has not been kind to the Witnesses on the theory that access to information hurts cults.

Proverbs 8:1-3 -- is Wisdom personified as a female?
by sd-7 ini was reading proverbs chapter 8 last night, and i just happened to be using the nasb, and i noticed that wisdom is personified as a female in verses 1-3, calling out to people to listen.
i noticed that in the nwt, wisdom is not personified in these verses, but rather referred to as "it".
eerie coincidence was that this morning on the subway train, a woman was reading proverbs 8 in her kjv as i was standing over her.

Wisdom is commonly referred to as female. My hunch is that it is a throwback the goddess worship. Gnosticism is steroid heavy on Wisdom being female. Maybe it is why the Roman Catholic Church elevated Mary first, then Ann, to have a kindly female to worship. I was told Marian worship started around 1,000 C.E. when the End Times were expected.

Tips on Job Interview's being an ex-JW and all of that
by mamalove indoes anyone ever think about when you are an ex jw and did not finish college, and how you handle that?.
by luck and skill i have always had a good job without a degree, but i found another opportunity, actually it is a municpal position, not a publicly traded or privately held company which i am used to working for for a decade.. i think i could squeek by on my 10 years of experience in my field, and the fact that i am in the process of enrolling and transferring credits to complete my degree.. so how would you handle that questions: "so do you have a degree in xxxx, what is your education background, etc?".
what i have said in the past, and it has helped as i got a subsequent job offer, is "due to circumstances, i did get married relatively young, and started a family, and was unable to finish college, because i put raising my children first.

It can't hurt to dress corporate, with a skirt suit. Silk blouses or good polyester look good. Conservative pumps. It is better to be more formal than informal. I wonder if you could call ahead and ask what attire is appropriate for that work culture.
I face a similar problem due to illness. My problem was that I was at the pinnacle of my profession and lost it all to facial pain for decades. My pain went into remission so I feel I should work again. They aren't family friendly. Many women, though, are is the same boat. There have to be support groups on the internet. Basically, it is a quandary to explain your late degree. It is none fo their business. They may have prejudice against the Witnesses and wonder about your character that you were drawn to a cult. Keep the focus on what you can do for them.
I've found that professional interviews are much nicer experiences than clerical/retail interviews. After all I've said, you rarely know how a person will react to any story. One person may find your story inspirational. Another may be appalled. Personally, I find it inspiring. There is now a cable show called Fairy Jobmother. The hostess is not the most polished person but what she counsels makes sense. Monster and Careerbuilders have forums. You should do extensive research for an interview. My personal experience is that some people treat me as a pariah and others do not. I am the same person. I'm not changing. I keep in mind that I only need one job, not a whole bunch of jobs. Much is luck. (OMG-I forgot, the luck word). Authenticity is also important. In the past, I worried so much about the content of what I was saying, that people thought I was an arrogant private girls school type. I thought I was projecting scared rabbit. Role playing helped me.
Your college placement office should help you with all of the above. Tuition pays for it.

Jehovah's Witnesses and the Media
by Spade inhttp://www.watchtower21.org/2011/01/jehovahs-witnesses-and-media.html.
at times, jehovah's witnesses are mentioned in the media in connection with a violent crime.
people shouldn't always believe everything they read--especially, it seems, on the internet.

Much to my chagrin, I agree that the media highlight crimes alleged performed by cults and Mormons, etc. I believe it is religious prejudice. It is not notable or newsworthy if someone is Catholic or Protestant. Also, the contrast between groups who have an "I'm vastly superior to you" attitude get extra ribbing. The contrast between the sanctimonious church member and reality is too stark to ignore. The Senator who was caught by the police soliciting gay sex in the men's room is a case in point. Most people don't care about sexual orientation. The story had legs because he vehemently denied other gay people their rights, masquerading as heterosexual. His vote was crucial on certain matters. Overall, though, humans are fallible humans, all religions commit crimes, and it is unfair to call attention to minority religions.
The sanctimonious part should be fully exposed. When you publicly proclaim your morals as extraordinary, you are fair game.

It Is WRONG To Make Threads About What The Watchtower Is Doing If You Do Not Have Facts To Back It Up!!!
by minimus ini think we should not make statements about what the watchtower society is secretly doing if we can not substantiate the statements.. we do not know if a "bethelite" is doing whatever he claims to be doing clandestinely.
when we make threads or statements about things we have absolutely no proof of, we are making ourselves look bad.. when impressionable people read these things, it sets our efforts back immensely.. please think about what you're doing.
it's counter-productive!.

Why can't we use journalistic conventions, such as a source, a highly placed source, a top JW official, or cite the references. Word of mouth is important. Of course, how did converts get into the Witnesses in the first place? I would not put it past the WTS to plant false stories. Of course, I have no proof. It is only a hunch.
I'm unclear why they care so much about this site. Are they going to convince anyone here? It seems to me that just to be present here, a decision has been made. Perhaps regulars should print retractions when it is clear the prior info. was wrong.

I did not know about the doctrinal change in 1995. May I ask briefly what was decided? It was the central tenet of Witnesses to me.. I was just a child and tween. Tween got me into problem. No, it actually started in fifth grade. It doesn't boggle my mind because the Witnesses change everything all the time. It shocks me that the mass of Witnesses never wonder why all the changes. If this is Jehovah's instruction, why worship Jehovah? These people die believing the lastest on bloood and other doctrines. My family suffered greatly for being Witnesses. Actually, my mom was raised in Rutherford's time and Knorr;s, Franz, and we lost count. She said the Society was much better when it was small and had some intimacy. Vindicating God's Name sounds like a campaign slogan -- what does it mean?

Witness literature has never had a nice flow to it. A family member was a Maoist and had these perfect English pamphlets prepared by a foreign government. The grammar was perfect. The vocabulary words were good. Nevertheless, no native English speaker ever uttered such words. The Witnesses are similar. The writing is stilted and uniform in tone. It has improved very slightly over time.
My brother and I convulse in laughter describing illustrations in the WT and the orange book, dating myself.
Questions I never thought I could ask: how do they do it? why do they do it? Idiots cannot write they do. Why not write in a more compelling fashion?

Did You Believe That The World Adored JW's?
by mentallyfree31 inas a jw, i always believed that the outside world adored us.
i knew that many people didn't care for us, and didn't believe our teachings, but i thought our conduct was a "bright light" shining to the world.
from the stage, we heard endless stories of business people and other non-jws praising us because we were such nice people.

There are countless JW jokes on TV and in print. Countless. In fact, they seem to be escalating.
It is the bothering people at home when other modes of communication that are not so intrusive are available.
We are a joke. I don't feel JWs are deeply hated (except by ex-JWs). JWs are viewed as ineffectual lunatics. People who bother you when all you want to do is eat your pancakes. Hatred might be a better sign of respect. Respected JWs are not.
People were very annoyed when I knocked on the door at age eleven with my quote about Revelation some chapter. Mainstream Protestants felt superior. Roman Catholics seemed dazed -- it was pre Vatican II.
The JW jokes are legendary. It reminds me after 9/11 when we were through mourning. Business had to start. Letterman and SNL had to produce shows. The govt explained that we needed laughter and that the best way to rob terrorists of their power is to laugh at them.
